Featured Artist at the ACF
Make sure to check out the Artists’ Coalition of Flagstaff Gallery where I’m showing as the featured artist for March. You can see quite a few of my photographs at the gallery, here on my site, and all of them on my Flickr page.
Being the featured artist this month, I got a spot in the Noise, a local arts & news magazine for Northern Arizona. Here’s the article text:
Making Tracks – by Clair Anna Rose
Photographer Nick Allen became involved with the Artists’ Coalition of Flagstaff after designing their website. Besides being a photographer he runs his own design company, Sublime Dzine.
“I seem to do best when I’m just part of the place,” Mr. Allen says, “Some other animal in the woods, or some other guy at the party, disappearing really. People are a challenge for me sometimes, I feel it’s only polite to let someone know you’re photographing them, but that changes the way we present ourselves. You have to be invisible to get that true emotion from someone else through a camera. I think the same goes for nature and animals; as soon as you make yourself known, everything changes.”
Nature tends to be his primary focus when shooting, and travel has played a big part in his photography. “My wife and I traveled a lot before we became pregnant recently, and my camera was everywhere I went,” Mr. Allen shares. “We made tracks in London, Jamaica, Mexico, DC, and all over the West here in the past couple of years. I have an Olympus waterproof point and shoot I always carry that’s survived a three story drop at the cardinals stadium, dove to about 40 feet when I dropped it in the Caribbean, and saved my leg when I crashed my motorcycle; and it still works!”
Mr. Allen is the featured artist for the month of March at the ACF Gallery, 13 North San Francisco Street, Suite 103. An opening reception will be held during the First Friday ArtWalk from 6pm to 9pm on March 4, 2011.
